Sorry, I'm Late

My sister sent me this joke yesterday, and let’s just say I relate a little too well to it. “Sorry, I’m late, it’s God’s timing, not mine!” I started to think more about it (mostly because I am late for everything), and I realized that I often put God in the late category with me. What I wanted didn’t happen in my timing, so that means God is late. The God of the universe, Creator of Heaven and earth, Creator of me… He’s late?

We live in a society surrounded by instant gratification. If my computer loads too slowly, I am knocking down the IT door. But what would it look like to sit in God’s timing? While my computer is loading, who can I listen to or encourage? How can we be present and observant when we go places? The next time you grab coffee, put your phone down and be open to a conversation with the barista. Or the next time you watch the big game, invite someone you want to get to know better. God gives us these moments to use, and we can be stewards of God’s love— outreach in our community. So next time you are late, think about God’s timing and what He would do with it.
