Humble in Stature
Holy Week
Bethany Cyphert
Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. Why did He choose a donkey?
If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:
“Say to Daughter Zion,
‘See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”
The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. -Matthew 21:3-7
Donkeys are not symbols of luxury but of harsh, dirty work, whereas horses are symbols of kings. So why did Jesus choose a donkey? Because He is not a God for only the rich and powerful, He is a God of all. Humble in stature and gentle in heart. Those who rejoiced in Him as He rode knew He was King without symbols of wealth and royalty. Mary rode a donkey into Bethlehem, humble and chosen to carry Jesus— the one who would one day save humanity. Jesus rode in on a donkey, knowing that He would die for our sins and give us a way home. But He also fulfilled a prophecy.
He is boldly declaring that He is the Messiah (Zechariah 9:9). So that those who desire a relationship with Him will be given eternal life. Life in Christ. There is victory in the branches of the palms, humble power in a young donkey, and eternal life in Christ.
